The Village Gondola
An ode to this trusty old gondola and the lovely folks who, on the daily, soar into @sugarbowlresort on this historic machine.
.
Last month, I chased @xanderfire around the resort. As the sun set over Mt Disney, and we floated across the flats stuffed in this cozy old gondola, I was struck with a deep appreciation for these historic ski relics. The Sugar Bowl Gondola was built in 1954 and at the time was the West Coast’s first gondola. Now, in a world of high speed quads, magic carpets, and glimmering automated ticket checkers, there’s something special about the rooted simplicity of a manually operated gondola. The weathered wooden building, the sturdy old steel, the operator who always greets you with a smile, and waves farewell as they lock you safely into your little fly machine. I came back the next day clutching a super 8 and 2 rolls a film, inspired to capture the feeling of skiing @sugarbowlresort via the gondola.
